sardigna no est italia

I am very fascinated by my origins and my homeland Sardinia is a true symbol of great history and ancient traditions. I wanted to produce an outcome that would celebrate its importance and reveal the personality of a place full of mystery and beauty that fought for its independence for hundreds of years.
The project includes a typeface based on every folk and historical element of the island, supported by additional artworks inspired by the various traditional aspects, produced as the project evolved. Each character is drawn from an existing object and adapted to be part of the whole type composition, by preserving at best their original appearance and features.
“My Sardism was born before the Sardinian Party rose, that is, since, on the benches of elementary schools, I wondered humiliated because in the history of Italy there was never talk of Sardinia.” – Marianna Bussalai

The brief was part of the D&AD Blood Awards 2019 and was set by Monotype. It requested to celebrate a community of choice with the use of a typeface. Following my research for the essay Graphic Design & Ocean Crisis, I wanted to celebrate the ocean community to address the gravity and urgency of the collapsing biodiversity. Each letter is hand-drawn and is inspired by existing creatures of the ocean.
